Herta Müller read from her novel Atemschaukel (“Everthing I Posess I Carry With me”) @ SR2 Kulturradio

Herta Müller is obviously a master of language — the reading, which Ginger and I attended (here’s a picture of us in our seats)…

Ginger + Me

was… bedrückend (that was the term I found most appropriate last night). This term is hard to translate into (American) English, because America (and Americans) does (do) not really know much about such situations as described in the book… perhaps horrifying captures some of this, but it is the element of real, actual totalitarian government that is completely incomprehensible to those who have not lived anywhere other than in a “Wild West”.

The live reading was recorded and will be broadcast (link is not yet live @ time of writing) on the radio (SR2 Kulturradio) on Tuesday, 26. April, from 19:04 to 20:00 (GMT/UTC). The original text is available from Hansa Verlag, the English translation is published by Carl Hanser Verlag.

  1. I’m waiting patiently for the past few years to see if this great book has been translated into English -perhaps you could let me know sometime!
    Many thanks,
    Kind Regards from Ireland
